Hello, my name is Nathan and I am an alumni from Omicron class. PhiDE was by far one of the best organizations I joined in college. Through it, I met some of the most inspirational individuals and developed a better understanding of what it is really like to work in the medical field. The United States is home to people of all ethnic backgrounds, and as a medical practitioner, your patients will also reflect this diversity. I am a firm believer that being an outstanding practitioner is much more than simply the knowledge you bring into the examination room; how effectively you can connect and communicate with your patients are equally as important. These are skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. So, I am currently taking a gap year to travel parts of Australasia and South East Asia to develop these skills (and see some cool places on the way). By forcing myself into countries with different languages and cultures to my own, I hope to improve my ability to emphasize and communicate with all types of people and become a more effective practitioner in the future.

I joined Phi Delta Epsilon as a freshman and am an alumni of the Kappa class (2009). I rushed Phi Delta Epsilon along with my good friend, Marc, primarily to meet other like-minded individuals who wanted to pursue a career in medicine. As a part of Phi Delta Epsilon, I had the opportunity to travel to India for a month as part of a medical trip. I became involved with board and as a result was truly able to appreciate the diversity of our chapter, which at the time had over 100 members. Most importantly, I met many great people, of whom I formed long lasting friendships with that transcended my time at UCI. In 2014, after a gap year, I began my medical education at UCI School of Medicine. I have truly enjoyed nearly everything about medicine thus far, from meeting patients and physicians to learning new material. I am now a third year medical student and it has been 7 years since I had joined PhiDE. I have symbolically taken only a few steps forward in this profession, but each of those steps have made all the difference. There is simply so much more to learn and an infinite amount of good to do in a lifetime.
